So hard to advance with no gems, is there any other way than buying and levering up to get them?

I've been playing Cooking Fever for about 4-5 months, and have never purchased gems with 'real' money. I'm Level 80, own all the restaurants, never made an in-game purchase, and managed it without resorting to cheating. ^_^ Here's what I do:
1) Increase experience level (EL), tracked at top right of game screen. You can earn 7 gems for each new (EL). Just play the same level over and over to get to the next EL and earn more gems. As you move up through the restaurants, you earn more experience per restaurant level (RL). So, you get more experience points (EP) playing the Indian Restaurant's Level 15 than playing the Fast Food Court Level 15. Figure out which RL awards the most EP, then play it over and over to level up more quickly. I have to gain 9400 EP to level up. Better for me to play the Sushi Restaurant's Level 40 (awards about 700 EP) 14-15 times than to play the Fast Food Court's Level 40 (awards about 100 EP) 90 times to achieve the same results.
2) You don't have to totally upgrade each restaurant to achieve 3-stars on each restaurant level, BUT upgrading DOES help increase how many experience points you earn in each restaurant level. Also, as you advance in the game, you don't necessarily have to achieve 3-stars on all the restaurant levels to be able to purchase another restaurant. So, you don't necessarily need to spend all your gems to fully upgrade the tables, or purchase the best crusts for your pizzas. You just have to be finicky and try to gauge which gem-investment is going to give you the most 'bang' for your buck. Some food investments help increase how much you charge, so that you earn more coins, which can help you beat a level. In other cases, it may be that you need to upgrade the seats or lighting to increase your customer's wait times/tip times to beat a level. Some equipment investments help decrease the amount of time it takes to cook/prepare stuff. But each restaurant is different. Heck, each LEVEL is different. But, as I said earlier: the more you upgrade within a restaurant, the more experience points you will earn within the restaurant levels. For instance, in one restaurant, you may discover that you earn 200 experience points for beating its Level 20. Upgrade some of the food, and/or equipment, and/or restaurant decorations and you'll discover in playing Level 20 again later, that you earn more experience points now. How many more experience points relies heavily on what and how much you upgraded. It's slow and painful, but it's worth it. I should note here that I also figured out that just because a Level is a higher number (Level 38 over Level 34), doesn't necessarily mean it will earn you more experience points. Also, just because you serve more customers in one level doesn't mean it will earn you more experience points in another level where you serve fewer customers.
3) If you commit to at least opening the game once per day, after a certain number of days (I think it's 10?...) you will automatically earn 2 gems each time. Some have found ways to cheat this system. LOL, as I stated earlier, that's not how I roll. So, I just wait. But, that means in 5 days, you could earn 10 gems.
4) Play your highest earning restaurant level over and over to earn more coins so that you can play the casino. As the other commenter mentioned, spend the 500 coins each time to play the slot machine. I never even bothered with the '100' or '200' options, so I don't know if/what they pay out. The '500' isn't all that great, honestly (LOL, this comment is for the developer, if they're reading!). But it's better than nothing. I personally think that the slot machine is rigged to only ever land on the Single Coin icon (which only pays out 600 coins); the Double Coin icon (which only pays out 1000 coins... and RARELY comes up); or the Single Gem (which pays out 15 gems). Psychologically, as a player, I definitely feel annoyed with the fact that I will never experience a Triple Coin, Double Gem or Triple Gem payout... but, hey, game developers need to make money, too. So, I just live with it. I just wish that ever so often, one of those other rewards came up. Anyway, I personally will save up about 100,000 coins, then go to the casino and just roll over and over until I get the 15 gems. Then I just leave the casino and go back later in the day, or just play again the next day. USUALLY, not always, if I persist I'll get a Single Gem hit each time. So, that's roughly 15 gems a day, plus the daily 2 gem bonus, plus 7 gems if I level up. That isn't guaranteed every day, but the potential is there.

EASIEST WAY TO EARN 5 GEMS IN LESS THAN A MINUTE, GUARANTEED:
1) Make sure you're playing offline
2) Change your phone/tablet date at least 2 weeks, or a month ahead
3) Enter the game to receive 5 gems as a gift for your restaurants being closed for a while
4) Completely exit the game (task kill the app)
5) Repeat steps 2-5 until you've earned your desired amount of gems

4) close the games
5) change day to 1 day after
6) open the game back - you should get 2 gems
7) close the games
8) Repeat no 5-8

Thanks Veggie Kate. I don't like the cheats either. It's good to have a reminder of leveling up, casino, and opening game daily. and I refuse to pay money for apps so this game is great. What fun would it be to have unlimited everything?-who'd want to even play the game if all tasks were finished in a month? My advice: enjoy the game.

I've been playing since January (3 months) and I am on level 82. It is true that the slot machine is rigged... I have spun it 1000s of times and what you say above is accurate, single coin, double coin, single gem and nothing else, ever. (To the developers) It honestly would way more satisfying if we could have more ways to earn gems or a larger amount based on cost of upgrades! Promise I'll still play....

I think that when the new update comes out I think there would be a common way on collecting gems. Well, I get single gem really rare. Coins in casino is not common. I really think their testing your luck on the casino.

Hahaha I was a bit nervous seeing I'm still the only who owns an iphone 4. But i did it a few times and it stopped working. i think you need to turn of your network connection - I was on airplane mode then I was able to get all my gems.
